"Hanau Kumulipo i ka po, he kane
Hanau Po' ele i ka po, he wahine
O kane ia Wai'ololi, O ka wahine ia Wai'olola
... Ua hanau-mano ko' akua...
... Hanau mano iloko o Hina-ia- 'ele'ele..." (i)
Born was Kumulipo in the night, a man,
born was Po'ele in the night, a woman,
Man for narrow waters, woman for wide waters...
born as a shark was my God...
born as a shark in the month of Hinaia'ele'ele...
The antipole to "From the Deep
Blue". That drowned
whaler, do you remember? Nothing is ever entirely over, and eventually
he just came back onto land, born again ashore, different now,
and yet somehow: just the same...

jetzt, und doch noch irgendwie: der gleiche...
