Where do you start... yes, where do you start to separate the presence from the past, how do you deal with all those things you thought would last...

There a two ways to read Shirley Horn's song (ii). For a long time I thought that she sung about an important love story she had experienced and that had ended. Actually there is no clear allusion to that. This is why I had this idea that it could just as well be pain she sings about, a continuous pain, pain persisting for so long that one gets accustomed to it, accepting it as eternal. And all of a sudden: it is over.

Pablo Picasso once said, "It took all my life to again be able to paint like a child." And myself? Perhaps I will need my entire life to learn again how to love - and feel loved - as a child.

Where do you start... wo fängt man an, wie löst man die Vergangenheit von der Gegenwart, wie lässt man all diese Dinge los, von denen man immer glaubte, sie würden ewig währen...

Man kann das Lied von Shirley Horn so oder so lesen. Ich dachte lange, sie besingt eine große Liebe, die jetzt zerbrochen ist. Tatsächlich gibt es aber keinen eindeutigen Hinweis, und so kam mir die Idee, dass es vielleicht der Schmerz ist, den sie besingt, ein Schmerz, der so lang, so ewig war, dass man fast dachte, er wird auch für immer bestehen. Man hatte sich schon so sehr an ihn gewöhnt - und plötzlich ist er vorbei.

Pablo Picasso sagte einmal "Ich habe mein ganzes Leben gebraucht um wieder so malen zu können wie ein Kind." Und ich? Vielleicht werde ich mein ganzes Leben brauchen um wieder so lieben zu können, mich wieder so geliebt zu fühlen, wie ein Kind.
